occasion of the interview in question. I said that ry leave was only goin to be 6 months, that during that time there would be

a certain a ount of vacation: the Lone Tacation (under the

arrangements for my leave then made), Christmas and New Year

Chinese New Year, Race Teek, and Faster w that I should

probably have cleared off lost if not all of the heavy cases

then pending that very little work was done in the arly part

of the year, owing to the frequent breaks for vacation that

I was of opinion that in these circumstances Mr. Rees Davies

could do very little harm, that he was probably capable of

doing the assize work, and that in these circumstances I shoula

be very glad if he received the appointment. I think that Your

Excellency will agree with me that even in the circumstances ry

As Your Excellency used the words "hitherto

unprecedented" with regard to my application for leave, I

assumed that Your Excellency would have preferred it to have

been based on precedent.

I must remaind Your Excellency of the

circumstances under which the arrang ment for ry leave was ome

to with Your Excellency some nine months ago.

The interview was at Your Excellency's

request; and the enquiries which Your Excellency put to me with

refrence to Mr. Rees Ravies opined with the remark, that you

were desirous of knowing my plans as to poing on leave, an Mr.

Rees Davies was anxious to go on leave and it was often

necessary in such circumstances to look a long way ahead, and

you therefore desired to know my opinions on Mr. Rees Davies'

qualifications. I then stated what my intertions as to applying

for leave were, and gave Your Excellency my opinion as to hr.

Rec■ navies's qualifications to act as Chief Justice as above

set out. It was then arranged that hr. Rees Davies should go

on leave shortly afterwards for six months, so as to fit in
